MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Midtown community is mourning the loss of a popular chef who was killed in an apparent road rage incident.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) said Jody Moyt, Executive Chef of Lafayette’s Music Room, was stabbed to death Sunday night, and those who worked with him called the stabbing a senseless act of violence.

“I really miss him,” said Donald Perkins, a staff member at Lafayette’s. “I cried a whole lot. I took it real hard. We feel real bad right now. Everybody in there is just sad. We’re just trying to hold our composure together.”

There was a huge sense of sadness Tuesday morning when FOX13 visited Lafayette’s Music Room, a usually lively, popular restaurant in Midtown.

Perkins said that sadness could be felt all across Overton Square.

“Me and Mr. Jody were real tight. We were real tight,” Perkins said. “We started this company together; we were just like brothers. He’s going to be really missed. He’s going to be really missed. Everyone around him really liked him. He just was a good person.”

MPD said Moyt was stabbed to death by 57-year-old Jonathan Brush.

Court documents showed Brush called police around 10:45 p.m. Sunday and claimed Moyt ran him off the road on Sam Cooper and Hollywood. Brush also claimed Moyt threatened him.

According to the affidavit, Brush then admitted to stabbing Moyt. The chef died at a hospital.

Brush appeared in court Tuesday on a second-degree murder charge. He’s being held on a $1 million bond.

Lafayette’s Music Room closed early Monday once they got word of Moyt’s death.

Staff told FOX13 they are back to regular business hours but will likely close to allow workers to attend Moyt’s services.
